ICC World T20: Strengths and Weaknesses of Super Eight teams
The group stages are over now. It is time for some real T20 action. All the eight qualified teams will battle it out in the Super Eight stage. It is time to fasten your seat-belts and be prepared for the T20 roller-coaster ride.

Before all the actions kickstarts lets have a look at each team’s potential.

Australia

Strength: Top-order of the batting line-up is in good form. David Warner, Mike Hussey, Shane Watson hold the key.

Weakness: The team is relatively inexperienced and is also under the leadership of an inexperienced skipper George Bailey. There is no quality spinner in the side in spin-friendly conditions.

Opportunities: Four-time 50-over world cup winning side is still chasing its maiden T20 world cup title. The way they performed in group stage should give them confidence to excel in Super Eight.

Threats: This current Australian team has not played enough matches in sub-continent conditions and this might expose their batsmen against quality spin bowling attack. Their pace battery too might not get enough purchase out of the track.

England

Strength: The defending champions have a good batting opening pair. Captain Stuart Broad’s all round ability adds more variety to the side. Off-spinner Graeme Swann will be their trump card.

Weakness: The way they lost wickets against India, they showed how vulnerable they are against quality spinners on sub-continent conditions.

Opportunities: If they go all the way and defend their T20 world cup trophy, they will become the first international T20 side to defend their title.

Threats: This team is talented but lacks experience at the international level. The team that won the T20 world cup in 2010 had experienced players like Kevin Pietersen and Paul Collingwood.

India

Strength: Team India has a star-studded batting line-up and on top of that they have played a lot of cricket in Sri Lanka in the recent past and done well.

Weakness: Barring the previous game against England, India’s bowling has struggled a lot. Their death bowling has been a cause for concern.

Opportunities: Mahendra Singh Dhoni and his men can relive their glory they lived in 2007 and the conditions are also very favourable for their spinners like Ravichandran Ashwin and Harbhajan Singh. With 50-over and under-19 world cup trophies in their kitty India can complete a hatrick of world cup wins.

Threats: There is a question mark to Virender Sehwag’s fitness. There is no other specialist opener in the side if he misses out.

New Zealand

Strength: They have quality T20 cricketers in Brendon McCullum, Daniel Vettori, Tim Southee etc. Brendon McCullum’s batting form and Daniel Vettori’s bowling form can turn the match in Kiwi’s favour.

Weakness: Their bowling attack except Tim Southee and Daniel Vettori looks inexperienced. Their recent performances against India in India showed they are not the best players of spin bowling.

Opportunities: New Zealand is still searching for their maiden T20 world cup trophy and talent-wise they have a side that can spring up surprises on their day and beat the best.

Threats: The entire team’s performance in the world cup depends heavily on Brendon McCullum, Daniel Vettori, Tim Southee etc.

Pakistan

Strength: Pakistan team has played a lot of limited overs cricket of late. Their spin bowling department looks very formidable with Saeed Ajmal and Shahid Afridi in great form.

Weakness: Their batting looks a bit shaky as this team does not have a consistent match-winning batsman. The batting-order has quality but lack consistency.

Opportunities: The 2009 World T20 champions can make full use of the spin-friendly tracks as the teams outside the sub-continent are not very comfortable playing spin in these conditions.

Threats: Pakistan is a mercurial side, on their good days they can be devastating but on their bad days they can be disastrous. They have succumbed under pressure in world cup matches against India.

South Africa

Strength: South Africa is a side to look out for in this world cup. They have the best pace-battery with Dale Steyn spearheading it. They have the experience and quality of batsmen like AB deVilliers, Jacques Kallis, Richard Levi etc.

Weakness: They do not have any major weakness but despite possessing a lot of quality, the Proteas have always succumbed under pressure in knock-out matches.

Opportunities: The only trophy which eludes from the illustrious Jacques Kallis’ wardrobe is an ICC world cup trophy. This team has the potential to shed the ‘chokers’ tag and go all the way to turn their world cup dream into reality.

Threats: Since 1996 and till date the South Africans have perished under pressure in tournaments like world cup and they would hope this does not happen again.

Sri Lanka

Strength: Sri Lanka has a lot of quality in every department of the game and they enjoy the home advantage and crowd support. They have always been a force to reckon with at home.

Weakness: Sri Lanka is a competitive side but they have not been very consistent of late. Their performances in finals have not been up to their standards. In 2007 and 2011, 50-over world cups they reached the finals but lost. In 2009 they entered the T20 world cup finals but lost to Pakistan.

Opportunities: With home conditions and crowd support they cannot have a better opportunity to win the ICC World T20.

Threats: In the batting department Mahela Jayawardene, Kumar Sangakkara and Tillakaratne Dilshan needs to perform because their middle order lacks a bit of consistency.

West Indies

Strength: This team looks the most formidable T20 side on paper. An in-form Chris Gayle, a devastating Kieron Pollard, the mystery spinner in Sunil Narine make them the tournament favourites.

Weakness: Their team possesses a lot of quality but they have not played a lot of T20 matches together as a team.

Opportunities: Once West Indies were one the most fearless sides in the world but they lost their way and it is an opportunity for the current side to perform and live those moments of glory which their predecessors lived.

Threats: This team despite having all the resources required for an ICC T20 world cup win has the tendency to come a cropper under pressure and slip the advantage from a winning position.
